BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene)

Flags: F-R07
Also known as: Butylated hydroxytoluene, E321, 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol
Kids Food & Snacks

What it is

BHT is a synthetic antioxidant preservative closely related to BHA, used to prevent oxidation of fats and oils in cereals, snack foods, and packaging materials. It is often used alongside BHA.

SEVERE

BHT demonstrates endocrine-disrupting properties and is restricted in children's food products in multiple countries. While evidence is less definitive than BHA for carcinogenicity, the endocrine disruption data and the availability of safer alternatives justify a SEVERE flag for children's products.
